No Surprises Act & Good Faith Estimates
• A law recently went into effect called the "No Surprises Act".
• This law states that you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost before you receive that care, including psychotherapy, and is intended to be an estimate of services that are reasonably expected for your health care needs.
• While it is not possible for a psychotherapist to know, in advance, how many psychotherapy sessions may be necessary or appropriate for a given person, a Good Faith Estimate may provide an estimate of the cost of services rendered that are provided per session.
• The estimate is based on information known at the time the estimate is created, and does not include any unknown or unexpected costs that may arise during treatment.
• A Good Faith Estimate is not a contract.
• If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you may dispute the bill.
• Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
• For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, please talk to your provider, or you may visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
